John's First Turn
John goes next, and starts with Step 1. He moves Locke to an adjacent Location.

John moves to Step 2 and announces Locke will engage the Location. He flips it over - it's the "Seaside Cliffs."

He follows the instructions and draws a Fate Card - it's an Encounter card, "Mosquitos."
Rule: Encounters are things your Characters have run into on the island, and have to deal with immediately with a Power Check. There's no avoiding it. You read these cards aloud, place them on the location your Character is at, and resolve the Encounter immediately.
John places the Mosquitos card on the Location, and begins to perform a Power Check.
Rule: Performing Power Checks
If you are facing an Encounter or are attempting to lead another Character, you will have to resolve the conflict with a Power Check.

To perform a Power Check against an Encounter:
1. Roll a die and add it to your Character's Power. You may combine multiple Characters at the same location, along with any modifiers from Equipment, Events or Special Abilities.
John rolls a die for Locke - it's a 3. He has no other modifiers to apply to Locke's power, so Locke's total is an 8.
2. Roll a die and add it to the Encounter's Power.
Melissa rolls for the Mosquitos - it's a 5. The Mosquitoes have a Power of 2, for a total of 7.
3. Compare the total Powers; highest total wins.
Locke's 8 beats the Mosquitos 7. Locke has survived his first day on the island!
4. Follow the instructions on the Encounter card for what happens if you win or lose (nothing happens in a tie). Then discard the Encounter.
John takes the Mosquitoes off the board, and places them in the discard pile. With nothing left to do, it's Melissa's turn.

Melissa's First Turn
Melissa moves her piece on to an adjacent tile, announces Kate will engage the Location, and turns it over - it's "Claire's Tent."

Melissa draws two Fate cards, both Events: "Late" and "Bad News."
Rule: Events represent different plot points or twists from the show. You will spend the game using Event cards to shape the game to your will. Each time you draw an Event card, you may decide whether you want to use it immediately, or hold it for use at a later time. Players who have more than four (4) Events in their hand will need to discard any extras at the end of each of their turns.
Melissa shows the two cards to Bruce, who chooses to discard "Late." Melissa then takes back "Bad News," and decides to hold on to it for later use. It's now the end of her turn. The first round of play is complete!
